Stroud Green

The full refurbishment of a Victorian terraced house in Stroud Green.

This project is all about 'the enfilade' - bold, red, perfectly aligned doorways create dramatic vistas through the house and bring visual order to the existing patchwork plan.

The poor-quality rear extension and conservatory were removed to make way for a contemporary, thermally efficient extension. The wide, glass doors and level terrace provide the family with an uninterrupted view of mature trees and eases their access to the garden. The material palette is simple - red and brown toned bricks laid in a stretcher bond form the main façade.

Creating strong visual sight lines was key to unlocking the plan and internal arrangement of spaces. We connected the front and rear Reception Rooms by adding new timber French doors aligned perfectly to the retained French doors on the original rear facade. Painted in a deep red, a nod to the red toned exterior, the openings allow for the spaces to flow and interconnect – perfect for hosting friends and family.

As keen cooks, the clients wanted a spacious and sociable kitchen. The focal point is the large, deep red island that friends can gather around whilst bespoke, timber cabinetry wraps the walls. A large banquette seat and dining table lines the flank wall enabling family life to function at its best. During the day, large roof lights flood the space with natural light and at night, layered lighting creates a warm and cosy space to hang out as a family.
